If you hold your husband’s hand, he’ll probably give your hand a squeeze to go with it.
When he gives your hand a squeeze, you’ll look him in the eyes and smile.
When you smile, he’ll smile back.
Then he’ll reach over and tuck in the loose strand of hair behind your ear.
You’ll probably notice the laugh lines around his eyes or the gray at his temples – when did those get there? – and wonder if you have them, too.
The laugh lines will make you think of all the times that you’ve laughed together, made all the sweeter by all of the times that you’ve cried together.
You might get carried away and run your fingers through his hair as memories flood your mind.
As he reaches over to put his arm around your shoulder, you’ll whisper “Remember the time…”
He’ll nod and smile, then answer with a memory of his own.
Thinking of those times, you’ll think of how much you each have grown and changed.
You’ll realize that it’s true – one does get better with age – like good wine and good cheese.
You’ll probably start to giggle as you think about your husband being cheese and wondering what kind of aged cheese he would be, the picture in your head too funny for words.
So you’ll start to laugh and he’ll start to laugh with you.
And as he joins you, he’ll give you a squeeze.
And chances are, if he gives you a squeeze, he’ll probably want to hold your hand to go with it.
I believe that right now – right in the middle of the messy fullness of our regular life – is the time to take time and be intentional in our marriages.
