“I’ve been convicted by a kids’ Bible.”
I remember her saying it like I’m still sitting in the room. My Wednesday morning Bible study group was talking about the reality of not having time to read the Bible, to get that Quiet Time thing done “right”.
All of us moms sitting around, some feeling like failures, heard those words.
I think some how I had discounted the stories that I read my daughter over and over again. The same stories I’ve heard over and over again. But those stories are the beginning of what I learned about God, His character, and how much He loves the people He has created and chosen to be His very own.
About the same time, my daughter got a stunning children’s Bible as a gift. The Jesus Storybook Bible is written for four year olds and every single story points to why Jesus had to come and what He had to do for us.
The perspective on stories left me in tears over and over. (Still does.)
After we had read through it two times during Family Worship and several more during daily reading time, we decided it was times to switch to another story Bible. I had just received For Such A Time As This to do a review and I liked it, but I was sad to see The Jesus Storybook Bible get put back on the shelf.
I was also excited – I love learning more about the women in the Bible and how God used just plain, regular people like me to showcase His greatness. I was excited to share it with my daughter – especially before my son was old enough to give me a bunch of eye rolls on having to read story after story about a bunch of girls.
For Such A Time As This has been such a lovely and awe-inspiring gift. Many weeks during family worship, my throat catches as the tears begin to form. The perspective on the stories is beautiful and thought-provoking. And the last page of each story has a section where they highlight what we just learned about God and then has a prayer for the character of children.
I often think about what it would do and mean to women if they took the time to pray the kind of prayers that they pray for their children and pray them for themselves. I know to some it seems selfish. But I just keep thinking that to be equipped to be the kinds of wives and moms that God is leading us to be, then we need to be asking to be equipped to do that great work. (More on this later, I promise. This I am SO excited about.)
I am loving reading For Such A Time As This so much that I just want to read it with my friends, talk about it, share how it impacted us. So that’s what I’m going to do – right here on the blog. I even invite your daughters, son, husbands, or whoever you do you Bible-reading time with.
I’ll start right away next week. I invite you to grab a copy (it’s even available on Kindle so yay!) and join along if you want or pick up whenever you find some time along the way. I don’t know if I’ll do every story, but I’ll definitely do a lot of them.
And I’m so excited to share them with you and see what you think. Invite some friends to the blog for the stories that you really love or really touched you. We are better together, friends, when we’re lifting and supporting and sharing. We are better together.
I’m so excited to share this with you all! What do you think of this new idea? Will you be following along?
